ABOUT

FABxLive, the 16th annual global Fab Lab Network conference. was the first edition of a distributed, FREE online FABX conference. The online platform gave us the opportunity to stay connected, reflect and engage deeply around Fab Lab and other community responses to COVID-19 (2020 Global Pandemic), the current state of the world and the vision for the future. With more than 2,000 Fab Labs in 126 countries worldwide, we brought together members of the international Fab Lab Network, government representatives, manufacturing industry, artists, teachers, academic researchers and experts in the field of digital fabrication, to present, envision, innovate, create community, disseminate best practices in digital fabrication and discuss solutions to our world's challenges during this unprecedented time in history.

The event took place from July 27-30, 2020. Over the first four days, we hosted expert panels with a total of 38 keynote speakers during our live stream FAB SYMPOSIUMS. On July 31, On July 31, we organized a community led GLOBAL FAB DAY, a day dedicated to all of us inventing and imagining locally and together.

FABxLive takes a team of experts and coordinators to make it a smooth and thoughtful experience for everyone. We made a point of making sure that this conference would be open to everyone and there would be no monetary barrier. But the meeting does cost money to run. Please consider making a contribution to help with the costs of FABXLive. We very much appreciate your kind donation, at any level.

EMERGENT FUTURES

PARTICIPATE

FABX Events integrates knowledge and collaborations that happen during the year in over 2,000 fab labs across the world. Members of the community propose content through workshops, talks, discussions and working sessions. FABX provides time and space for networking and for hands-on making with digital fabrication. This is an opportunity to brainstorm and share your projects, collaborations, ideas, and work with the global community. Please note that to give everyone in the global community an opportunity to participate, we ask that anything you submit be adaptable for an online format and online interaction, and that includes options of pre-recording or leading something real-time and Live.

We also encourage you to register TODAY in the link below. Our new FABxLive member platform will allow us to share, contribute, promote and interact with each other leading up to and during the conference.

Get involved with the community and share your knowledge and your thoughts around a particular topic with a discussion-based workshop.

Theoretical workshops are an opportunity for discussion and collaborative development around networking and challenges that arise in the community, it is the best way to expose your ideas to those that have a same interest. It is the best way to create, develop and come up with new ideas that will help everyone involved.

Hands-on workshop where others can follow along while in their local Fab Lab or at home. These can be pre-recorded or live, and can be done in your native language or in English, depending on your preference.

Please keep in mind that, given the circumstances around Covid-19, not everyone will have access to tools you would find in a Fab Lab unless they can purchase them ahead of time. Whether you are new to FABx Events, or have been to many workshops are a great way to meet new people and share knowledge in the network. For some you will need to purchase your materials locally so please check them out in advance. This is also a chance to rethink what workshops we can do with things you can buy at local stores or find in most anyone's home!

After all of this ZOOM time, we need to get active during our conference, 3-5 min fabercise time provided by memebers of our community. So get ready to do some quick workout, or at least a nice laugh!

Host come from all around the world, we are so excited!

We would love to know what you have been working on during this year! Have you opened a new fab lab? Did you make an amazing project that you want to share with us? Would you like to present yourself and what you do to the network? This is the special place to present them, make sure you keep up to date with what the #FabLabNetwork is doing.

Friday, July 31st is a day dedicated to making!

For Global Fab Day, Fab Labs and Regional Networks have the opportunity to create local activities, workshops, presentations, Fab Lab open houses, whatever your community needs and wants. Its a way to get creative, think about how your community can be empowered and supported at this time.

In order to create a smooth online conference, we are reached out to our community in volunteering a few hours of their time towards helping make sure this conference is a huge success. We have five teams:

- Tech Support

- Chat Moderator

CHALLENGES

Challenge

FABxLive and FabCare, in collaboration with Dassault Systemes SOLIDWORKS and the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab, awarded the COVID-19 Innovation Award to three Fab Labs that showed strong examples of resilient initiatives undertaken during the COVID-19 crisis within the Fab Lab Network.

The three winners are:

  1. Innovative design solutions: Maite Sosa Methol and Fab Lab Montevido, Uruguay
  2. Impactful community/regional network: Delia Millan and Fab Lab Cuenca, Spain
  3. Innovative solutions for the ‘new normal’: Mayra Ascencio and Fab Lab Peru

The winner from each category will be awarded with 1 Full Scholarship for either of our Academany educational programs: Fab Academy and Fabricademy.

Congratulations and THANK YOU to everyone who is working so hard to support and protect their community. If you haven't already, we highly encourage you to join the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab Open Covid-19 community platform and share your COVID-19 response projects!

FOREST CNC: Mobile Hand Washing Challenge!

This year, we encouraged you and your Fab Lab to tackle the challenge of creating a mobile hand washing unit that can be used for populations in need.

While the CDC promotes hand washing as the main way to avoid contracting the coronavirus, there are a surprising number of people in the world who do not have access to running water. Among these are Native Americans living in the Navajo Nation in the United States, who represent part of the more than two million North Americans without access to running water in 2020. The homeless population also has difficulty sourcing water when support services are limited or closed entirely. And many other populations around the world are without access to this basic health-supporting capability.

The winners of this challenge were: Vigyan Ashram in Pune, India, and a special Hunanitarian Award to Garage Academy at NIT, Michigan City, Indiana. Congratulations to both!

Challenge

Social Distancing Challenge!

This year, we called on YOU to create fun projects that keep us all safe and healthy (at a distance. Using your fab lab or home lab, participants had the week of FABxLive to literally ¨prototype distance¨ between people. This is a literal ¨physical¨ distancing! The winners were announced on Friday, July 31, and each will receive a BROTHER sewing machine, sponsored by Fab Foundation!

Join us in congratulating our three winners:

  1. Philippe Libioulle, FabLab4D (traffic light head cap)
  2. Pooja Jadhav, Vigyan Ashram (coughing throat)
  3. Beth Lloyd, Newport, RI (6 foot man)
